Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal received incessant rain on Wednesday and Thursday. According to reports, Bengal will continue to receive heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms over the next two days.
In Kolkata, several arterial roads and alleys were seen to be submerged in water and large parts of the city remained waterlogged throughout the day, after overnight rainfall on Wednesday.
The southern parts of Kolkata received more rainfall than the north, leaving streets and alleys waterlogged in Ballygunge Circular Road, Loudon Street, Southern Avenue and places in Kasba, Behala and Tollygunge.
The weather department has predicted that West Bengal will receive more rainfall and thunderstorm activity on June 17-19.
Due to the presence of a cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas, strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal, widespread rain and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Bengal.
Kolkata recorded 144 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours. More rainfall may lead to further waterlogging in low-lying areas of the state, including Kolkata. Traffic congestion due to waterlogging and intense rainfall is expected to plague citizens over the next few days.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea as as the water levels will continue to rise on Thursday and Friday. People have also been advised to stay indoors over warnings of lightning and thunderstorm.
