Sikkim Pharmacy Council highlights pharmacists’ role in tackling antimicrobial resistance

The Sikkim Pharmacy Council (SPC) has concluded its month-long state-level celebration of World Pharmacists’ Day and National Pharmacy Week 2026, highlighting the importance of responsible medicine use and the pharmacy profession’s contribution to public health.

Held under the theme “Swastha Bharat – Combating Antimicrobial Resistance”, the programme began on September 30 and concluded on November 2 at the STNM Auditorium, Gangtok. The initiative brought together pharmacy students, academicians, healthcare professionals, regulatory representatives and other stakeholders to strengthen awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The celebrations included poster presentation, leaflet designing, scitoon and quiz competitions, followed by a social media awareness campaign from October 1 to 29 featuring skit and reel-making contests. The council, in collaboration with Government Pharmacy College, Sajong, also organised a national seminar on October 30 and 31 to discuss pharmacy practice and antimicrobial stewardship. A 5K run on November 1 promoted fitness and community participation.

Health and Family Welfare Minister G.T. Dhungel attended the closing ceremony as chief guest. Other dignitaries included MLA Kala Rai, Phurba Rinzing Sherpa, Navraj Gurung, Dr Pema Sedan Lepcha and Pharmacy Council of India vice-president Jashubhai Hirabhai Chaudhari. PCI representatives Mohd. Bashir Bandey, Dr H. Lalhlenmawia and Professor Nilimanka Das were also expected to attend.

The event recognised contributions to pharmacy education and honoured competition winners. The council said coordinated action by pharmacists, healthcare professionals, policymakers and the public remains essential to addressing AMR and preserving the effectiveness of medicines.
