Spotify sees festive listening surge as music moves from personal playlists to shared celebrations

Spotify has recorded a rise in festive-season listening in India, with music increasingly moving from individual listening to shared spaces as celebrations gather pace across the country.

According to Spotify’s latest listening data, Indians spend an average of two hours a day on the platform, while 59% of weekly users surveyed said Spotify makes them feel happy and joyful. Another 73% said their time on Spotify feels more positive than time spent on social media, while 76% reported a positive impact on their lives. The data also showed that 86% of listeners surveyed prefer focused audio, including music and podcasts, over video content.

Festive listening patterns are also changing. Party playlist streams rise 34% during the festive period, while devotional listening increases 13%. Listening across TVs, cars and speakers climbs 11% above the August baseline, reaching 5.24 million weekly content hours.

In Kolkata, the festive shift is particularly visible around Durga Puja, when devotional music, traditional Bengali songs and contemporary party playlists become part of household and community celebrations. The trend also points to growing opportunities for the city’s music, entertainment and consumer ecosystem as shared listening becomes an integral part of festive gatherings.

Spotify said the changing listening habits underline the role of music in connecting people, celebrations and everyday moments during India’s festive season.
