In a significant development in cancer care during COVID-19 pandemic, Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati has started Stereotactic Radio Surgery for the first time in the North East India on 17.07.2020. A 56 year old female patient of primary lung cancer with a single brain metastases measuring 2.2 x 2 cm in right parietal lobe of the brain was treated with whole brain radiotherapy followed by very high dose of radiotherapy in a single fraction which is known as stereotactic radio surgery. It was carried out by using VMAT and 6XFFF Beams.
According to Dr A K Kalita, Professor & Head, Dept. of Radiation Oncology, the advantages of this highly sophisticated treatment is that it is a non-invasive procedure, reduces hazards of open surgery and requires shorter treatment time. Dr M Bhattacharyya, Professor, Dept. of Radiation Oncology and Deputy Director (Research) stated that this Linear Accelerator based frameless radiosurgery treatment is more convenient
for the patient. It is also associated with high rate of tumour control.
Director, BBCI Dr A C Kataki congratulated Dr A K Kalita, Dr. M Bhattacharyya, all the faculties, medical physicists, and technologists of the Department for achieving this important milestone. The Department of Radiation Oncology conducts M.Sc in Radiological Physics, MD in Radiation Oncology and 2 years Post Graduate Diploma in Radiotherapy Technology. Dr Debabrata Barmon, Deputy Director (Academics) stated such advanced treatment facility will be very beneficial for the students.
This high-end Linear Accelerator was inaugurated by Mr K. N. Vyas, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Govt. of India on 8th February 2019 in presence of Dr C. S. Pramesh, Director, TMH, Mumbai.
