A female outsourced worker at Tripura Central University was injured during a protest by contractual employees that escalated into a confrontation with private security personnel on Tuesday. The incident occurred while security attempted to create a path for Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Shyamal Das, as demonstrators had surrounded the main administrative building. The protest was sparked by news that the university administration planned to appoint four outsourced workers as Daily Rated Workers (DRWs), an action that provoked discontent among the remaining contractual staff members. Protestors contended that the administration’s decision was arbitrary and breached the principle of equal opportunity since only four individuals were chosen from a larger group of 93 outsourced employees, all of whom held similar roles and received comparable pay. They expressed grievances over having worked at the university for almost a decade through a third-party agency on fixed wages, arguing that the DRW designation would allow selected workers direct engagement with the university while excluding many who have contributed equally.
