Surrendered militants in Tripura end 5-hour blockade after talks with authorities

A group of surrendered militants in Tripura lifted their highway blockade on Tuesday after over five hours, following government assurances to address their demands. The Tripura United Indigenous Returnees People’s Council (TUIRPC) had initiated a 24-hour blockade on the Assam-Agartala National Highway at Hathai Kator in West Tripura district from 8 AM, protesting against the non-implementation of promises made during their surrender. The agitation disrupted vehicular movement, prompting intervention by authorities.

Following discussions with District Magistrate Vishal Kumar, the blockade was lifted around 1:30 PM. District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar confirmed that a meeting has been scheduled for March 4 to address the grievances of the surrendered militants.

TUIRPC leader Daniel Borok Debbarma claimed that several assurances, including the withdrawal of police cases against former rebels, remain unfulfilled. Their key demands include free education for their children, implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and full execution of the 1993 ATTF accord.
