Tata Steel to continue giving salaries to dependents of employees falling victim to Covid

Tata Steel would continue to pay monthly salary to the family of all employees who die due to COVID-19, the Jamshedpur-based steel manufacturer has announced.

The salary would be paid till the retirement age of the deceased – that is 60 years. The monthly pay would be the same as the last salary which the person drew before his demise, Tata Steel said in a statement issued on May 23.

In addition, for all its deceased frontline employees, Tata Steel would bear “all the expenses of their children’s education till graduation in India”.

According to the announcement made by the company, “Tata Steel’s best-in-class social security schemes will help ensure an honourable standard of living for their families.

“Tata Steel has taken the path of #AgilityWithCare by extending social security schemes to the family members of the employees affected by #COVID19. While we do our bit, we urge everyone to help others around them in any capacity possible to get through these tough times,” the Jamshedpur-based company said on Twitter while announcing the schemes.

The announcement has earned the company much praise and appreciation on social media.

Tata Steel is the latest major employer in India to announce financial support plans for the families of its workers that have lost their lives to Covid-19.

Last week, hospitality group Oyo Rooms said it would help the families of its workers who have died of the coronavirus in a number of ways, including eight months’ pay and support for their children’s education for five years.

“The battle against COVID is far from over but I hope these initiatives will help ease out the difficulties for the families, the company’s founder Ritesh Agarwal said in a series of Tweets.

Earlier this month, glass manufacturer Borosil said it would pay the salaries of workers that died of Covid for the next two years.
