Tension in Tripura’s Baramura Hills as Surrendered NLFT Faction Blocks Assam–Agartala Highway

Late on Sunday night, tensions erupted in the Baramura Hills of Tripura as members of a National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) faction that had surrendered blocked the Assam–Agartala National Highway, claiming that the government had not fulfilled long-standing demands stipulated in their surrender agreement. The group claims that despite repeated appeals to the administration, a number of promises made by the government at the time of their surrender have not been carried on. They claimed that because they had no other choice, they blocked the national route in order to voice their complaints.

The public was severely inconvenienced by the blockade, which stopped all passenger and freight vehicle traffic. Long lines stretched from the Baramura Hills to Hawaibari as a result of numerous cars being stuck on both sides of the route from late at night until early in the morning. Senior administrative authorities and a sizable detachment of police officers raced to the scene upon getting informed. The administration promised the demonstrators that their demands would be communicated to higher authorities and that efforts would be made to address the problems as soon as possible after lengthy talks. The NLFT members lifted the barrier after receiving the promise.

Normal traffic movement was gradually restored after the road was cleared. However, the incident has raised fresh concerns over security and stability in the Baramura Hills region. The local administration has stepped up surveillance in the area and is closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further unrest.
