The CM of Arunachal praises the 700-year-old Chakzam Bridge in Tawang

Tawang’s 700-year-old Chakzam Bridge is a wonder of ancient engineering and history, according to Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who praised it as a “testament of vision, skill, and resilience.” According to CM Khandu, Dupthop Thangtong Gyalpo, an engineer and Buddhist saint, constructed the iron suspension bridge over the Tawang Chu river between 1454 and 1458.

CM Khandu praised the bridge on the microblogging platform X, calling it a representation of the state’s inventive and cultural heritage. He said, “Gyalpo’s inventiveness created not only a useful structure but a work of art in a time when there were no contemporary tools. More than just a bridge that spans a river, the Chakzam Bridge connects us to a rich history of creativity spanning millennia. He also valued the bridge as a “timeless piece of history,” elevating it as a reminder of the heights attained in the past and the limitless potential that lies ahead.
