For his 17,000-kilometer ‘Ride to Clean Air’, Vanlallawmzuala Varte of Mizoram has been inducted into the India Book of Records. Varte (Lza Varte) achieved the “Highest Elevation Gained on a Bicycle to Spread Awareness of Air Pollution” and the “Shortest Time to Visit All States and Union Territories on a Bicycle to Spread Awareness of Air Pollution.” Environmental activist Vanllallawmzuala Varte, 34, began his voyage on January 25, 2024, and he lives in the Mission Veng neighborhood of Aizawl.
Lza Varte traveled the entire length of India in 283 days, traversing a variety of difficult terrains, including Umling La, the highest paved road in the world. Additionally, he received awards and accolades for his work and was greeted with open arms in every state and territory he visited. During his visits, he planted trees, spoke at schools, and helped bring about a change in the towns he visited. His reception and assistance were greatly aided by the Pollution Control Boards of the individual states.
The Mizo community’s strong feeling of togetherness was evident throughout the difficult nine-month trek. Mizo people from all over India came together to form a special WhatsApp group named “All India Tour Ride to Clean Air.” During his arduous ride, the group proved to be a vital support system for Lza Varte. During his voyage, Lza, a dedicated environmental activist, used WhatsApp groups as virtual companions. His commitment to environmental preservation and community involvement is demonstrated by his roles as a Sunday school teacher, Mizoram Cycling Association leader, and Mission Veng Youth Adventure Club leader.
