The Meghalaya High Court’s Chief Justice, Justice Soumen Sen, assumes leadership

Justice Soumen Sen, a senior judge with more than three decades of legal experience, has officially assumed charge as the new Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. His appointment follows a notification from the President of India on September 26, based on the recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium earlier this month.

Justice Sen was until recently serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, where he took charge on September 16, 2025. Prior to that, he had been a sitting judge of the Calcutta High Court since April 2011. Born and educated in West Bengal, Justice Sen began his legal career in 1991 after enrolling with the Bar Council of West Bengal. He went on to establish himself as a prominent advocate, particularly in civil and constitutional matters, before being elevated to the bench.

Over his 14 years on the bench, Justice Sen has presided over a wide spectrum of cases, from commercial disputes to constitutional challenges. His judgments are known for their clarity and strong reasoning. Judicial peers and legal practitioners have often noted his commitment to ensuring timely justice and upholding constitutional values.
