Assam CM Himanta Biswa made an announcement during his visit to Nagaon district on Thursday that from the coming week, around thousands of men in Assam who tied the knot with the girls aged below 18 will be taken into custody.
Strict action will be implemented on individuals who had involved in child marriage earlier, he stated.
Nagaon district had observe a large number of child marriage (42 per cent) and girls getting pregnant before 18 years of age (15 per cent).
The above announcement was part of the government’s campaign against child marriage, which has been cited as the main cause behind child pregnancy, which in turn was responsible for high maternal and infant mortality rates in Assam.
