The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has instructed the Tripura Medical College (TMC) and BRAM Teaching Hospital to submit a detailed progress report within three weeks on the ongoing investigation into a ragging incident that occurred at the college. According to the report, an FIR was filed on September 25 at Amtali Police Station against 18 students accused of ragging fresher students. While the police have initiated an investigation, the THRC report notes that no arrests have been made so far. The charges against the accused include violations under the Anti-Ragging Act, which carries a penalty of up to four years in prison or a fine.
The THRC expressed concern over the lack of prompt action and emphasized the seriousness of ragging, calling it a violation of human rights that disrupts the learning environment. The Commission directed the Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, to closely monitor the investigation and ensure swift legal action.
The report also highlighted the importance of proactive measures from the college authorities to prevent such incidents, noting that ragging appears to have been an ongoing issue. The THRC urged the college to take immediate steps, including the imposition of bonds from the accused students and their guardians, along with counseling sessions.
