Three Mizo women rescued from Syria, express gratitude to Chief Minister Lalduhoma

Three Mizo women, who had been stranded in Syria for over 20 months, were safely repatriated and met with Chief Minister Lalduhoma on August 27 to express their gratitude.

The women were welcomed back to Mizoram by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who informed them about the Mizo Diaspora Cell, a support system for Mizo individuals facing difficulties abroad. Their ordeal began in 2022 when they were sent to Syria by a private placement agency from Mizoram to work as housemaids, but without proper working visas. This led to severe harassment by Syrian authorities.

The situation came to light thanks to Mizoram BJP Spokesperson Lalremsangi Fanai, who played a crucial role in the legal processes for their return. The rescue and repatriation efforts, which began in May, were coordinated by Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K Sapdanga.

The women arrived in Aizawl on August 24, 2024, and are expected to return to their villages in Champhai and Hnahthial districts shortly. Their successful return marks a significant relief for their families and highlights the ongoing support efforts for Mizos in distress abroad.
