Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are anticipated to collaboratively contest the upcoming elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), scheduled for April 13, with vote counting on April 17. Despite the absence of official confirmations from both parties, it is strongly believed that Pradyot Kishore Debbarma’s TMP will contend for approximately 18 to 20 seats, while the BJP will aim for 10 to 8 seats. Recent interactions between Chief Minister Manik Saha and TMP leader Debbarma have been marked by mutual criticism on various issues, indicating ongoing tensions. Reports suggest that Debbarma is currently in Delhi and is expected to return in the coming days, where a formal announcement regarding their electoral alliance is anticipated soon. In the previous elections held in 2021, TMP ran independently and achieved victory, contrasting with the BJP’s alliance with the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), which resulted in a disappointing performance, securing only nine seats. The mediation of a former Chief Minister is believed to be pivotal in facilitating this alliance, which, if materialized before the tribal council elections, could be a strategic maneuver aimed at alleviating tensions between the TMP and BJP in Tripura.
