To ensure justice for daughters in Assam, govt to table new act

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to safeguard move against child marriage, has decided to abolish Muslim marriage act. The Assam government will table a new act in the upcoming monsoon session of the assembly.

He said, “We have taken a significant step to ensure justice for our daughters and sisters by putting additional safeguards against child marriage. In the meeting of the Assam cabinet today, we have decided to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act, 1935.”

The Assam CM also said repealing will bring parity in registration of marriage and divorce.
