TOPCEM CEMENT ORGANIZES FREE CATARACT SURGERY CAMP FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED PEOPLE

Topcem Cement is going to organize a free eye screening camp and sponsor 50 cataract surgeries for underprivileged people in association with Eye Doctors – An Eye Clinic & Surgery Centre, Guwahati. This is the 6th free cataract surgery camp since the year 2018 by Topcem Cement towards its aim to provide community eye care to masses. A total of around 500 + patients are expected to be screened for eye diseases in the rural areas in the districts of  Darrang, Udalguri and Baska and nearby areas over a period of 7 weeks which started from 15th January, 2023 by a team of ophthalmologists from Eye Doctors – An Eye Institute & Surgery Centre, Guwahati towards its joint initiative with Topcem Cement to have 50 cataract surgeries by March 2023.

Cataract Surgery for the selected patients will be conducted at Eye Doctors – An Eye Institute & Surgery Centre, Guwahati on subsequent weeks.Telling about the camp, Dr. Anil Kapur, President, Meghalaya Cements Ltd said, “Topcem Cement believes in helping the under privileged from various strata of the society. This is a continuous initiative since 2018, and we have been able to complete 170 numbers of surgeries till 2022. And our objective is to continue the same in the years to come.”The main objective of this free cataract Surgery camp is to reach out to the underprivileged aged people with cataract in remote areas.

The screening and operation facilities will be provided to the patients through Eye Doctors – An Eye Institute & Surgery Centre which is completely free of charge. While cataract can be treated with a simple surgery, evidence suggests that lack of money is a major barrier to uptake of cataract surgery among the poor. Around 40% of the poor people who are affected by cataract turn blind due to financial constraints. Poverty deprives them of access to healthcare and bad health deprives them of an income.
