Tripura CM unveils flood prevention plan for Howrah river

Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha has announced a ₹248 crore initiative aimed at improving the navigability of the Howrah River and addressing flooding issues in Agartala city. Speaking in response to a notice of calling attention, Dr. Saha stated that a draft concept paper has been prepared for strengthening the river embankment, which will be implemented under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) mode once funds are available.

The Water Resources Division of the Public Works Department (PWD) is currently conducting a special silt and waste removal program along the riverbanks, expected to be completed within six months.Dr. Saha highlighted that rapid urbanization along the Howrah River has contributed to water pollution, sedimentation, and reduced navigability, leading to frequent floods. Activities such as sand mining, solid waste disposal, deforestation, and infrastructure development have altered the river’s natural flow.

To combat these challenges, the Tripura government has submitted a ₹145.71 crore Dredging and Rejuvenation project proposal to the Jal Shakti Ministry, awaiting approval. The initiative, supported by Agartala Smart City Limited, aims to restore the river’s original course and enhance water flow.
