Tripura DySP fined ₹25,000 for assault, faces departmental action

The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has ordered Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Prasun Kanti Tripura to pay ₹25,000 as compensation for his involvement in an assault case on January 25, 2024. The Commission has also recommended that the Director General of Police (DGP) and Chief Secretary of Tripura initiate departmental proceedings against him for violating fundamental police ethics. The case was based on a complaint by Binoy Debnath, a resident of Agartala’s Abhoynagar, who alleged that his son, Dr. Kaushik Debnath, was brutally assaulted by Prasun Kanti Tripura, then SDPO of Amtali, along with his family members and others.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred while the father and son were retrieving food from a delivery point. During the altercation, Dr. Kaushik was reportedly attacked, and his mobile phone was snatched. The situation escalated when a group, allegedly led by Prasun Kanti Tripura, brutally assaulted Dr. Kaushik and used abusive language. The THRC’s investigation, which included testimonies from eight individuals, concluded that the DySP had misused his authority and participated in an unlawful assembly. The Commission noted his highhanded behavior and criticized his failure to uphold the principles of policing.

In its order, the THRC stated: “Such actions by police officers are unacceptable and can severely erode public trust in law enforcement.” It also directed the government to recover the compensation amount from Prasun Kanti Tripura’s salary and called for departmental proceedings against him.
