Tripura government says ‘zero tolerance’ for drugs

Tripura Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Saturday issued a strong warning to drug mafias operating in the region, saying the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy and given the police a free hand to arrest drug smugglers, including those believed to be kingpins.Speaking to reporters, Chowdhury alleged that a section of anti-national elements is exploiting Tripura’s international border to use the state as a corridor for drug trafficking. He said that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, is committed to protecting the youth from the menace of drugs.

“A dangerous network is using our border areas to push drugs into India. But now, the police have full authority to act. Daily seizures are happening, and our law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly,” the Minister said. He emphasized that earlier, the police lacked the freedom to take firm action, but under the current administration, that has changed. He also highlighted the importance of public participation and awareness, stating that the fight against drugs cannot be won by the government alone. “We need society to come forward. Families, communities, and local organizations must support this mission. Awareness campaigns are just as important as enforcement,” he added. To support individuals already affected by drug abuse, the Tripura government is in the process of establishing drug rehabilitation centres in the state — a much-needed facility that was previously unavailable.

“Earlier, Tripura had no rehab centres. But now, we are setting them up to help our young people recover and reintegrate,” Chowdhury said. The Minister also spoke about the government’s broader efforts in improving the health and education sectors in the state. He said that, in the past, students and patients were often forced to go outside Tripura for studies or medical treatment, but the current administration is now focused on strengthening local infrastructure and ensuring access to essential services. Chowdhury reaffirmed the Chief Minister’s firm stance against the drug trade: “There will be no leniency. No one involved in drug trafficking will be spared. We are determined to eliminate this threat to our society.”
