Tripura Government takes action over temple vandalism allegations

The Tripura Government has suspended internet services and imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the Dharmanagar sub-division of North Tripura following rising communal tensions over allegations of temple vandalism. In an official order, Home Secretary PK Chakraborty stated that due to ongoing tensions in the North Tripura district, the government has prohibited various forms of media for the next 72 hours starting from 5 PM on October 15. This includes SMS messages, mobile internet services, and press messages across all mobile service providers. Violations of this notification may lead to penalties under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.

Additionally, Superintendent of Police, North Tripura, recommended the imposition of Section 144 due to the escalating tensions between Hindu and Muslim communities. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sajal Debnath confirmed that the order will remain in effect until October 17, allowing exceptions for the movement of paramilitary forces, state police, government officials on duty, and patients requiring immediate medical attention. Educational gatherings will also be permitted during the day.

Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty noted that rumors of attacks on temples and mosques have circulated, causing unrest among community members. He assured that security forces have been deployed to maintain order and urged the public to refrain from spreading false information. “We request everyone to maintain peace. We will take legal action against those responsible for inciting tensions,” Chakraborty stated.
