The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has issued a notice to ILS Hospital in Agartala, seeking a response to allegations of negligence made by former Minister Gopal Chandra Das regarding the treatment of his wife, Swaraswati Deb (Das).
The THRC took suo-motu cognizance of the matter after a news report surfaced in local dailies detailing the incident. According to the report, Swaraswati Deb (Das) had undergone surgery for kidney ailments at ILS Hospital on September 14, 2023, under the care of Nephrologist Dr. Samaresh Paul and Surgeon Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee. She was discharged after undergoing dialysis.
However, in December 2023, when Gopal Chandra Das took his wife to the hospital’s Dialysis Centre at GBP Hospital, it was discovered that the permanent catheter line was not functioning properly. Subsequently, they took her to ILS Hospital, where they were charged Rs. 5,510 for treatment, only to find that the hospital had not cleaned the catheter line, as promised. After this, the patient was discharged, and the couple returned to GBP Hospital, where it was confirmed that the catheter line had not been cleaned, despite the payment made at ILS Hospital.
The THRC has expressed concern over the alleged violation of human rights and has directed ILS Hospital to provide a written response to the allegations. The Commission has also issued a notice to Gopal Chandra Das for his examination regarding the matter.
