Tripura implements a uniform policy for public schools with the goal of promoting equity

The Tripura government has introduced a common school uniform policy across all state-run institutions, a move it says will help reduce financial burden on parents while also creating a sense of unity, equality, and discipline among students. The new directive will come into force from the next academic year and will apply to students from Classes I to XII. According to the notification issued by the Education Department, the system has been divided into three broad categories. All Vidyajyoti Schools will follow a single uniform pattern, while PM-SHRI schools will retain uniforms of their own design. The remaining government schools will adopt another common colour scheme and style, thereby ensuring uniformity across the education system. However, four institutions have been granted exemption from the new rule: Shishu Bihar H.S. School, Sukhamoy HS School, and Umakanta Academy in West Tripura district, along with PM-SHRI Radha Kishore Institution in Unakoti district.

The government has clarified that the transition will be gradual. For the ongoing academic session, schools may continue using both old and new uniforms to allow families time to adapt. The Samagra Shiksha scheme, which already provides free uniforms to students in Classes I to VIII from economically weaker categories, will now distribute the newly approved attire. Distribution of these sets has already begun and is expected to be completed soon. Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the initiative would help students feel equal, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds. “Uniforms are not just about dress code; they symbolize discipline, unity, and a shared identity. This policy will bridge gaps among students and strengthen the image of government schools in the state,” he stated.

The Education Department has also instructed District Education Officers to oversee proper implementation. Principals, headmasters, and teachers-in-charge have been made directly responsible for ensuring compliance with the new dress code, while officials will regularly monitor progress and report back to the department.
