Tripura Police focus on timely justice through science and coordination

Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar on Sunday emphasized the need for shifting criminal investigations in the state toward a more forensic and scientific evidence-based approach. He said this would not only help improve conviction rates but also ensure victims receive timely justice. Speaking at a special workshop aimed at sensitizing officers and stakeholders on the new criminal laws introduced last year, DGP Dhankar said that successful prosecution, fair trials, and prompt convictions require coordinated efforts from multiple departments, not just the police. “Apart from investigation and trial, other departments like health, forensics, and prosecution play key roles. The new laws give utmost importance to completing judicial processes within a set timeframe. This means everyone must work together—from investigators to medical officers—to ensure complaints are resolved efficiently and fairly,” he said.

Highlighting the police department’s recent efforts, DGP Dhankar noted that the Tripura Police are trying to dispose of the majority of pending cases within a year, a move aimed at building public trust in the criminal justice system. “We are now focusing on building cases using forensic and scientific methods so that they hold up in court and lead to convictions. Our priority is not just to register cases, but to see them through with successful prosecution,” he added. On the issue of drug-related crimes, the DGP shared encouraging data. He stated that Tripura Police have already surpassed last year’s record in tablet seizures under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

“Last year we seized around 18.06 lakh tablets. This year, we’ve already crossed that figure, and seizures of other narcotics are also up. However, seizures alone aren’t enough. We need to ensure that each case ends in conviction. That requires better coordination among investigation teams, public prosecutors, forensic experts, and medical personnel,” he said. DGP Dhankar also reiterated the state police’s commitment to achieving the goal of a “Nasha Mukt Tripura” (Drug-Free Tripura). He called upon all stakeholders to contribute actively in this collective mission.
