Tripura Sees Deployment of 1971 War-Era Army Battalion Amid Bangladesh Unrest: CM

In response to the ongoing uprising in neighboring Bangladesh, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has revealed that an Army unit that played a significant role in the 1971 Indo-Pak war has been deployed in the northeastern state of India. Saha emphasized the importance of monitoring the situation, stating, “I am sending reports on the ground reality in the wake of happenings in Bangladesh and its possible impact to Delhi,” during an event organized by the BJP’s legal cell on Sunday. The Indian Army battalion currently stationed in Tripura is notable for having trained the Mukti Bahini and participated directly in the 1971 conflict. It is particularly composed of Mountain Divisions of the Indian Army, with the 20 Mountain Division (XXXIII Corps) being a key component alongside elements from the 8th, 6th, and 4th Mountain Divisions. These divisions were instrumental in the tactical operations conducted in East Pakistan, which is now recognized as Bangladesh, during the pivotal 1971 war.
