Tripura Student Murder: Rijiju Condemns Political Angle

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has criticized individuals for “playing politics” regarding the murder of Anjel Chakma, a final-year MBA student in Uttarakhand. Rijiju emphasized that such tragic incidents should evoke sadness from all, rather than political maneuvering, and expressed disdain for Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders who implicated the BJP in the student’s death, stating, “Shame on them.” Anjel was assaulted on December 9, suffering serious injuries from an attack involving a knife and a bracelet, and ultimately succumbed on December 26 after a 17-day hospitalization. His father, a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, claimed that Anjel was attacked while defending his brother from aggressors who had subjected him to racial slurs, referring to them as “Chinese.” The attackers hurled phrases like “Chinese momo” along with other racial insults. In response to the murder, opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have accused the ruling BJP of fostering a “normalizing” environment for hate and a “divisive mindset” that may have contributed to this violent incident.
