Tripura targets 2.3 lakh children in eight districts and improves child protection

Tripura has emerged as a regional leader in child welfare, with comprehensive protection systems now operational across all eight districts of the state. Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted the progress during the One-Day North Eastern Regional Convention on Child Rights held at Prajna Bhavan, outlining the state’s extensive efforts to safeguard children and ensure their holistic development.

Tripura currently runs 44 child care institutions providing shelter and support to nearly 950 children. In addition, specialised juvenile justice infrastructure, including Juvenile Justice Boards and Child Welfare Committees, operates actively in every district. Since 2022, around 28 children have found permanent homes through legal adoption, while all districts now have functional Special Juvenile Police Units to strengthen child protection. Beyond institutional care, over 4,200 children benefit from community-based sponsorship programs, and aftercare services have successfully reintegrated 14 young adults into society after leaving child care facilities. The government has also prioritised nutrition and healthcare delivery through initiatives like the Integrated Child Development Services and Poshan Abhiyan schemes, which have reached approximately 2.29 lakh children as of July 2025.

“Children are not miniature adults; they are human beings in their own right. Protecting them is safeguarding the future of our nation. If we neglect children, we neglect the very foundation of our society,” Saha emphasised, calling for active involvement from families, communities, and civil society alongside government efforts.
