Tripura, which ranks second after Sikkim in terms of foreign visitor numbers, is emerging as the next tourism hotspot in the Northeast

Tripura is fast emerging as one of the most sought-after destinations in Northeast India, with the state recording impressive growth in both domestic and foreign tourist arrivals over the past two years. According to the India Tourism Data Compendium 2025, released by the Ministry of Tourism, Tripura now ranks second only to Sikkim in attracting foreign visitors to the region.

The official data shows that in 2024, Tripura welcomed 601,000 domestic tourists, a remarkable 64.07% increase from 366,000 visitors in 2023. Foreign tourist arrivals also posted a sharp rise, with 91,000 visitors in 2024, compared to 67,000 in 2023, reflecting a growth of 36.15%. This surge in numbers highlights Tripura’s transformation from a relatively lesser-known travel destination to a prominent stop on the Northeast tourism map. Its diverse cultural heritage, historic temples, palaces, lakes, and improved connectivity are being seen as key drivers behind the trend.

Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury welcomed the report and credited the growth to the state government’s sustained focus on infrastructure development. “We have undertaken a series of steps and initiatives for the development of tourist spots in the state which were never developed during the then Left Front government. Recently, I along with officials from Tripura Tourism met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for some tourism projects, which we are hopeful will be sanctioned soon,” Chowdhury said.
