Tripura’s fisheries sector has suffered extensive damage, with losses estimated at Rs 1,350 crore due to recent flooding, according to Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das. The minister, speaking at a state-level review meeting on Friday, reported that a comprehensive loss assessment has been submitted to the Central government, which has assured support following a review.
The review meeting, the second of its kind this year, focused on evaluating the fisheries department’s progress at district and sub-divisional levels, identifying challenges, and finding ways to bolster fish production in the state. “Flooding in August severely impacted fish farmers, and we are actively working on measures to increase production and create more employment in the sector,” Das said.
Tripura’s annual fish demand stands at 1,16,000 MT, with local production at 83,000 MT. The deficit is typically sourced from other states and Bangladesh, though imports from Bangladesh have been disrupted. The state recently received Rs 10 crore in funds to aid affected fish farmers, and further Central assistance is anticipated once the submitted data is reviewed.
