Trust and creative freedom shape Arifin Shuvoo’s role in Sony LIV’s upcoming series Jazz City

The upcoming Sony LIV series Jazz City is set to bring the intrigue of 1970s Kolkata to screens, blending espionage, rebellion, and layered storytelling. At the centre of the series is actor Arifin Shuvoo, who plays the complex character Jimmy, developed through a close creative partnership with creator-director Soumik Sen. Speaking on the experience, Shuvoo said, “Stepping into a world as layered as Jazz City required a director who didn’t just give instructions but shared a vision. Soumik Da had complete faith in me from day one. He created a space where I could improvise, follow Jimmy’s instincts, and truly embody him. When an actor knows the filmmaker trusts their gut, performances go beyond the ordinary.”

In Kolkata, the series is expected to generate strong interest due to its setting in the city during the politically turbulent 1970s. Industry observers say the show’s Kolkata backdrop and period narrative could resonate strongly with audiences in the region, potentially strengthening the platform’s engagement in the Kolkata entertainment market.

Created, written and directed by Sen and produced by Studio 9 and StudioNext, Jazz City also features Sauraseni Maitra, Shantanu Ghatak, Aniruddha Gupta, Sayandeep Sen, Shreya Bhattacharya, Shataf Figar, Alexandra Taylor and Amit Saha. The series is scheduled to premiere on the streaming platform SonyLIV on March 19.
