Tuberculosis Deaths in Mizoram Hit Six-Year High

According to official data issued under the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) of the National Health Mission, Mizoram recorded up to 145 tuberculosis-related deaths in 2025, the highest number in the previous six years. 2,275 individuals, including 911 women, had a TB diagnosis throughout the year. Although there was a little decrease from the 2,291 instances reported in 2024, the number of deaths from TB cases continued to rise in 2025, with 375 cases found in private facilities and 1,900 cases found at government health facilities.Since 2020, when 31 deaths were reported, the number of TB-related mortality in the State has increased continuously. In 2021, it was 46; in 2022, it was 87; in 2023, it was 119; and in 2024, it was 136. Aizawl district had the most cases (1,569), followed by Lunglei (155) and Kolasib (138). Serchhip district had the fewest cases (52). With over 100 people registering through the online platform “Nikshay” to adopt TB patients or offer financial support under the Prime Minister’s TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, the high death rate has been reported despite increased community involvement in TB care.As part of India’s commitment to eradicating tuberculosis, the project seeks to increase community involvement, enhance patient treatment outcomes, and harness Corporate Social Responsibility contributions.
