West Bengal BJP MP Arjun Singh meets Piyush Goyal over ‘jute price capping’

Bharatiya Janata Party MP from West Bengal Arjun Singh met Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal in the national capital on Saturday to express concern over the capping of raw jute charges by the central government.

The assembly comes a day after the central government intervened in the election of chief ministers of 5 states, including West Bengal MP Mamata Banerjee, over capping raw jute fees.

“I met Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal regarding (jute industry). The meeting was once 1.5 hours long. He is fully satisfied that there is some issue and asked me to meet the textile secretary before taking it up before the top-level,” Arjun Singh told ANI after his meeting with the Union minister.

Underlining the seriousness of the problem affecting the entire jute industry in West Bengal, the BJP MP expressed joy and hope after a meeting with the Union minister.

“Jute mills are shutting down in West Bengal. We must sort this out together. With today’s meeting, I am sure we are moving in a desired direction,” he said.

The Center has fixed a rate of Rs 6,500 per quintal for continuous jute. A top cap of Rs 6,500 per quintal was fixed for 2021-22.
