On Tuesday night around 11 p.m. A herd of wild elephants was swept away in the Teesta River at the Gajoldoba Teesta barrage in Jalpaiguri. Actually reports indicate that the elephants became trapped in the barrage gate while floating in the river’s current. In fact the situation was quickly noticed by locals and barrage workers, who initiated rescue efforts. Despite their attempts, the strong current at the gate made it impossible to rescue the elephants. In the end, the gate was opened, allowing the elephants to float away.
