A two-day workshop on “Edible Insects for Sustainable Livelihood” organised by Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) in partnership with department of Zoology, Kohima Science College (KSC) began at the latter’s premises at Jotsoma, here Thursday.
Inaugurating the workshop, additional director, department of Agriculture, C Peter Yanthan pointed out the importance of insect species both in culinary choices and agricultural practices.
Earlier during the inaugural, HoD Zoology, KSC, Dziesevituo delivered the welcome address while Senior Fellow of ATREE, Bengaluru, Dr. Priyadarsanan Dharma Rajan gave a brief introduction about the workshop.
KSC principal, Dr. Lily Sema gave the presidential address while JPF, ATREE, Bengaluru, Fuchumlo Tsanglao proposed the vote of thanks.
The workshop is a part of a large-scale research project titled “Bioresources and sustainable livelihoods in Northeast India” funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
Resource persons from prestigious universities from across the country have been invited to share their expertise on the subject during the workshop which was attended by more than 30 participants from the entire Northeast region.
The workshop aims at discussing the importance of sustainable and ethical practices in harvesting and rearing of edible insects.
Further the workshop would focus on equipping the participants with a basic understanding of edible insects, how to identify and domesticate it.
ATREE is a global non-profit organization which generates interdisciplinary knowledge to inform policy and practices towards conservation and sustainability.
