This World Immunisation Week (24th-30th April) marks the 50th anniversary of the World Health Organization’s Expanded Program on Immunisation (EPI). This milestone honors the global immunization efforts that have saved numerous lives and protected communities over the past five decades. The Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) in India has successfully expanded immunization coverage to over 90% of children. Although coverage in the first year is high, drop-out rates after 1st birthday increase. A significant number of children in the country remain partially vaccinated.
Vaccination significantly prevents children from contracting various diseases, preventing 37 million childhood deaths in lower and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2019. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) strongly recommends vaccinations* for children and all eligible age groups including adolescents and adults.
During World Immunisation Week, parents are advised to consult their doctors about the recommended complete immunization schedule to protect their children from vaccine-preventable diseases, contributing to the collective effort to eradicate these diseases. Dr. Abhijit Sarkar, Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatal Intensivist Howrah says, “By prioritising immunisation efforts and working together as a global community, we can ensure that every child has access to essential vaccination and the opportunity to thrive.”
