The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Mizoram’s ruling party, has emerged as the dominant force in the recently concluded village council (VC) and local council (LC) elections, as per the State Election Commission’s (SEC) final tally.
ZPM won 266 out of 543 VCs and 54 out of 110 LCs, showcasing its widespread support. The Congress secured 43 VCs and 14 LCs, while the BJP managed to win just one VC. Independent candidates claimed seven VCs and two LCs. In terms of total seats, ZPM captured 1,153 seats across all VCs, followed by the Mizo National Front (MNF) with 744, Congress with 406, BJP with 17, and the Hmar People’s Convention with four. Independent candidates won 87 seats. In LCs, ZPM took 363 seats, MNF 197, Congress 147, and independents 11.
Polling was conducted peacefully on Wednesday across nine districts, excluding three Autonomous District Councils. Voter turnout was high, with 75% of the 4.4 lakh eligible voters participating in the VC elections and 64.79% in the LC polls.
