Arunachal Pradesh Chakma body seeks NHRC inquiry into alleged extortion linked to minor Chakma girl’s death

The Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Youth Association (APCYA) has approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), seeking an investigation into allegations that money was taken from the employer of a 15-year-old Chakma girl who died in Arunachal Pradesh, even as the Commission has already ordered a CBI inquiry into the case.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the APCYA said it had filed a complaint before the NHRC alleging that Chikond Chand Chakma of the All India Chakma Students Union (AICSU), who is the complainant in NHRC Case No. 57/2/18/2025-CL, and another individual, Amit Chakma, allegedly received or extorted Rs 3 lakh from the girl’s employer to settle the matter.
The NHRC had earlier, through its order dated March 13, 2026, recommended that the Arunachal Pradesh government hand over the investigation into the death of the minor girl to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The Commission cited lapses in the earlier inquiries and called for a fair, independent and child-sensitive investigation under relevant criminal and child protection laws.
The girl, who was employed as a domestic worker, died in Roing in Lower Dibang Valley district on December 11, 2025.
According to the APCYA, a video circulated on social media in which the victim’s father, Lakkhimuni Chakma of Gautampur village in Changlang district, alleged that the employer had paid Rs 3 lakh. He claimed that he received Rs 1.10 lakh, while the remaining Rs 1.90 lakh was allegedly taken by Chikond Chand Chakma and Amit Chakma.
