Assam Evicts Illegal Settlers

Amid the large-scale eviction drive across six districts of Assam, concerns are mounting that displaced individuals may attempt to enter neighboring Northeastern states. In response, the Nagaland government has issued advisories to border districts to remain vigilant. Similar alerts have been raised by Manipur and Meghalaya.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that most of the evicted people had encroached on forest land in districts like Cachar, Sribhumi, Dhubri, Barpeta, Hojai, Nagaon, and Morigaon, and some had migrated from other states such as West Bengal and Bihar.

The Arunachal Pradesh unit of the National People’s Party (NPP) has urged the state government to take urgent action to prevent illegal entry into Arunachal. NPP national general secretary Paknga Bage called for special check gates, a dedicated task force, increased surveillance, and a migrant tracking system.

The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) also expressed concern, urging the government to boost border outposts, coordinate with Assam Police, and activate task forces in sensitive districts. APCC president Bosiram Siram emphasized cooperation with locals, civil bodies, and central forces, while cautioning against politicizing the issue.
