The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has urged the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to intervene over alleged road blockades and obstruction of movement along the National Highway on the Assam-Meghalaya border. In a representation to Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, HITO president Donbok Dkhar and legal secretary Shaniah Nongrum alleged that Army personnel travelling in a civilian vehicle were stopped on the highway despite identifying themselves. HITO said it has submitted video evidence of the incident and called for action if the allegations are substantiated. The organisation claimed that such blockades have become recurring during periods of tension along the inter-state border and stressed that private groups should not be allowed to take the law into their own hands or use highways to exert pressure. Referring to a similar blockade call in December 2024, HITO said the situation was brought under control after it approached the Assam Chief Secretary. The organisation has called for a time-bound inquiry, stronger real-time coordination between Assam and Meghalaya, measures to keep national highways free from unlawful obstruction and a formal mechanism to address border-related tensions. HITO said its representation was intended to prevent escalation and ensure disputes are resolved through constitutional means while protecting citizens, emergency services and security personnel.
