Champhai launches school nutrition garden programme to promote healthy eating among children

The Champhai district administration on Tuesday launched the School Nutrition Garden Programme at Government Vengthlang Middle School as part of the National Nutrition Month, or Poshan Maah, observed during September.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aaquib inaugurated the programme and also addressed students and teachers at the event.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner said that until around two months ago, many schools in Champhai district did not have nutrition gardens. To address this gap, Project LEAD and PM POSHAN have been brought together to promote the availability of healthy and hygienic food for schoolchildren.

He said the initiative would provide students with practical learning beyond their textbooks while also encouraging habits that support their physical and mental well-being. The programme, he said, could help children develop a better understanding of nutrition and healthy food practices.

The Deputy Commissioner also reminded the students that they would have an important role in the future of their families, district, state and country. He encouraged them to continue on the right path and expressed hope that the nutrition gardens would contribute to their overall development.

Champhai District Education Officer K Lalsiamliani also urged students to take proper care of the vegetable gardens established in their respective schools. She said maintaining the gardens could provide significant benefits for both the physical and mental well-being of students.

During the programme, the Deputy Commissioner planted vegetable seeds and handed over additional seeds to Government Vengthlang Middle School headmaster Lalvena Khiangte for cultivation on the school premises.

The School Nutrition Garden Programme is being implemented in elementary schools across Champhai district in collaboration with Project LEAD under the Champhai District Transformation Programme.
