Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on September 1 extended greetings to the Adi community on the occasion of Solung, one of the community’s important traditional harvest festivals.
Taking to social media, Khandu wished his “Adi brothers and sisters” on the occasion and prayed for prosperity, peace, happiness and good health for every household.
“Solung Gii-Di Em Takamem Agampe!” the Chief Minister wrote in his message, invoking the blessings of Donyi Polo, Kine-Naane, Doying-Bote and Dadii-Bote for a bumper harvest.
Solung is a five-day festival traditionally celebrated by the Adi community, particularly across East Siang and Upper Siang districts of Arunachal Pradesh. The festival begins on September 1 and is closely linked to the agricultural cycle of the community.
The festival marks the completion of the sowing and weeding phase of farming. During the celebrations, people offer prayers for a good harvest, prosperity and the well-being of their families and communities.
A major cultural feature of Solung is the Ponung dance, performed by Adi women as part of the traditional celebrations. The dance and other customary practices form an important part of the festival and help preserve the community’s cultural heritage.
Beyond its agricultural significance, Solung brings families and communities together and provides an opportunity to celebrate traditional values and indigenous practices. The festival reflects the Adi community’s close relationship with agriculture, nature and the land.
