Chief Justice Of India To Inaugurate New Building of Itanagar Permanent Bench Of Gauhati HC

Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, is scheduled to inaugurate the new building of the Gauhati High Court’s Itanagar Permanent Bench on 10 August. The event will be attended by Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and other dignitaries. The modern high court complex, located in Naharlagun, includes five courtrooms and various other facilities, constructed at a cost of ₹135.35 crore. The project began in February 2021 and was executed by the Public Works Department, with M/s Ganapati Construction Company of Guwahati as the contractor.

Previously, the bench functioned temporarily from Yupia, where the final court session will be held on 8 August. From 11 August, proceedings will commence in the new building, with Justice Ashutosh Kumar presiding. Bar Association president TT Tara expressed excitement, calling the move historic and a step closer to the goal of a separate high court for Arunachal Pradesh. The association will also mark 25 years of the Itanagar Permanent Bench on 12 August, originally inaugurated in 2000. A separate high court was agreed to in principle in 2013.
