Congress and NPP MLAs set to join BJP, breaks seniority norms

A political storm is brewing in Arunachal Pradesh as reports emerge of five sitting MLAs from Congress and NPP poised to switch allegiance to the BJP just ahead of the upcoming elections, challenging the traditional norms of seniority within the party. The controversy escalated when Chief Minister Pema Khandu was seen accompanying two Congress and two NPP MLAs, along with BJP legislators, on a visit to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Sources reveal that the impending defection of five sitting MLAs, including two from NPP and two from Congress, along with an independent MLA, is driven by the allure of pre-assured party tickets by the BJP high command in a bid to consolidate power through appeasement politics. Despite rumors swirling, CM Khandu has denied any knowledge of the impending defections, stating, “Joining BJP and the distribution of tickets is at the discretion of the party’s high command.”

Among those expected to defect are Wanglin Lowangdong, Congress MLA from Borduria-Bogapani seat, Gokar Basar, NPP MLA from Basar, Ninong Ering, Congress MLA from Pasighat, Chakat Aboh, wife of late Tirong Aboh, an independent MLA from Khonsa West, and Mutchu Mithi, NPP MLA from Roing. Addressing the speculations, Gokar Basar, whose name is prominently featured in the rumors, refuted the claims while highlighting his achievements in Basar constituency over the past five years. Basar cited numerous development initiatives, including the construction of a boxing ring arena, installation of street lights, establishment of weekly markets, and enhancement of school infrastructures and healthcare facilities. He also underscored his district’s notable achievements in sports, emphasizing his dedication to grassroots development.

Basar’s potential move to the BJP has stirred anxiety among opposition candidates, who allegedly resort to underhanded campaign tactics fueled by black money. Basar’s supporters, including Zilla Parishad Members and retired officers, stand firmly behind him, anticipating an uncontested victory if he joins the BJP fold.
