Congress leader Sushmita Dev quits party, may join TMC

Congress women’s president and former MP Sushmita Dev has resigned from the party.  Sushmita Dev sent her resignation letter to Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi. She has also changed her Twitter bio to “Former Member” of the party.

Dev headed the Congress’s women’s wing, the All India Mahila Congress. She is the daughter of the veteran Bengali Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev and was a member of the 16th Lok Sabha from the constituency of Silchar in Assam.

She said in her resignation letter addressing to Sonia Gandhi, “Please treat this letter as my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress. I cherish my three-decade-long association with the Indian National Congress. May I take this opportunity to thank the party, all its leaders, members and workers who have been a part of my memorable experience. Madam, I thank you, personally, for your guidance and the opportunities you gave me. I value the enriching experience. I hope I have your good wishes as I begin a new chapter in my life of public service.”

Earlier on Saturday, she had met the Congress president along with other leaders of the Assam Congress.

Her Twitter handle was blocked over a post showing images of the family members of a minor girl who was allegedly raped and killed in Delhi. The images were originally posted by former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
