Setting a rare precedent in legal history, the court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge in Dibrugarh sentenced five accused to life imprisonment in separate cases. The prosecution stated that this is the first time in the district that five persons have been sentenced to life imprisonment on the same day. In addition, the court sentenced another accused to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a separate attempt-to-murder case.
Among those convicted is police constable Vicky Chetia, who shot dead his pregnant wife with his carbine rifle inside the premises of Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station itself. Based on police investigation and the chargesheet, the court found Vicky Chetia guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Similarly, the court found Rajiv Changkak guilty of murdering a landlord and his wife in a rented house in Bairagimath and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000.
In three other separate murder cases, the court convicted Sukram Murha and Raju Chetia, sentencing them to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 each, while Dipu Mech was sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a relative. Meanwhile, Putul Garh, accused in an attempt-to-murder case, has been sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment. The cases were argued on behalf of the government by Additional Public Prosecutors Chinmoyee Dutta and Nilotpal Phukan.
