A state-of-the-art Animal House Facility was inaugurated at the Defence Research Laboratory (DRL), Tezpur.
The facility was inaugurated by Dr. U. K. Singh, DS & DG (Soldier Support System), DRDO HQ. The facility is one of its kind in the Northeast region and will house laboratory animals, including mice, rats and rabbits, under controlled conditions to facilitate approved pre-clinical screening, efficacy and safety evaluation in accordance with applicable Committee for Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA) guidelines and prescribed ethical norms.
The facility will substantially enhance DRL’s capability for the biological evaluation of defence-oriented R&D products and technologies. It will support the generation of scientific evidence required for advancing indigenous technologies for defence personnel.
The facility will also serve as an important platform for Academia-DRDO collaboration with universities, medical colleges and research institutions across Northeast India. Subject to applicable approvals and ethical requirements, research scholars and young scientists will have opportunities to undertake collaborative pre-clinical studies and generate meaningful scientific data in areas such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, natural products, nanomaterials, biomedical technologies and environmental health.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Dr. Rajesh Kumar Garg, Centre Head, DRL, Sh. J. Venkateswarlu, CCE (R&D) East, Kolkata, Dr. Y. D. Bhutia, Scientist ‘F’, DRL and Dr. P. Chattopadhyay, Scientist ‘G’, DRL, Tezpur, along with members of the laboratory fraternity.
