Government Moves Resolution In Lok Sabha For Extending President’s Rule In Manipur

On Wednesday, the government introduced a resolution in the Lok Sabha to seek approval for extending President’s Rule in Manipur by another six months beyond August 13. Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, presented the statutory resolution for discussion. Speaker Om Birla noted that President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13 and approved by Parliament on April 2, which grants validity for six months. For further extension, both Houses must pass the resolution.

During the debate, Congress MP Anto Antony criticized the situation, calling it a “manmade disaster” caused by the government’s failure. He said the once peaceful and scenic state has turned into a place of violence and despair. Antony accused the government of worsening the crisis through internet bans, curfews, and excessive police force. He also highlighted the Prime Minister’s silence, stating that Manipur now echoes with the cries of suffering mothers and women, rather than the harmony it was once known for.
