The H.P. Ghosh Memorial Foundation on Monday laid the foundation stone for the H.P. Ghosh Medical College at Lalchari in Tripura’s Dhalai district, with Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) ManikSaha inaugurating the project.
The proposed medical college, located in the aspirational district of Dhalai, is expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand access to medical education in Tripura and the wider Northeast region.
The institution will begin with an intake capacity of 100 MBBS students from the next academic year and is planned to expand subsequently with postgraduate medical programmes, a College of Nursing and Paramedical Sciences.
Speaking at the programme, Chief Minister Manik Saha said the initiative aligned with the government’s efforts to strengthen medical infrastructure beyond urban centres. He said the project would help bring tertiary healthcare closer to rural and tribal populations, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for critical treatment.
Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, Founder and Chairman of Bandhan Group and project proponent, said the medical college was envisioned as a centre for healthcare, education and social transformation.
Named after late H.P. Ghosh, the father of Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, the institution is expected to provide specialised healthcare services, create employment opportunities and support medical education and research.
Senior government officials, medical professionals, academicians and members of the community were also present at the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
