Heavy storms accompanied by rain caused widespread destruction across Tripura between April 28 and 29, leaving one person dead, two others injured and thousands of families affected in several districts of the state.According to figures released by the State Emergency Operation Centre in Agartala, a total of 4,191 houses were damaged during the storm and heavy rainfall that lashed different parts of the state over two days.Officials said the damage included 195 houses that were completely destroyed, 547 houses that suffered severe damage and 3,449 houses that were partially damaged due to strong winds, falling trees and heavy rainfall.The weather-related destruction affected several districts and subdivisions across the state, forcing authorities to open relief camps and begin emergency response measures. In North District, the subdivisions of Dharmanagar, Panisagar and Kanchanpur were among the worst affected areas. Officials reported that 202 houses were damaged in these areas due to the storm. In Unakoti district, the Kailashahar subdivision witnessed significant damage, with 518 houses affected.
The situation was also serious in Dhalai district, where the subdivisions of Ambassa, Kamalpur, Gandatwisa and Longtharai Valley reported major damage. A total of 318 houses were damaged in the district. Authorities confirmed that one person died in the Longtharai Valley area after being struck by lightningduring the storm. The administration has started steps to provide assistance and compensation to the affected family.In Sepahijala district, heavy damage was reported from the Bishalgarh, Sonamura and Jampuijala subdivisions. Officials said 1,487 houses were damaged in the district, making it one of the worst-affected regions during the storm. The government also opened three relief camps in Sepahijala district to shelter affected families. According to officials, 784 people have taken shelter in these camps after their homes were damaged or became unsafe. Several parts of West district were also affected by the storm. Damage was reported from Sadar, Jirania and Mohanpur subdivisions, where 294 houses were affected.
In Khowai district, 73 houses were damaged due to strong winds and heavy rain. Gomati district also witnessed destruction in Karbook and Udaipur subdivisions. Officials said 222 houses were damaged in the district. Two people were injured after a large tree reportedly fell on them during the storm.In South district, authorities reported damage to 589 houses.Apart from residential buildings, educational institutions also suffered damage in different parts of the state. According to official figures, a total of 659 school buildings were damaged due to the storm and rain.The state government has started relief and assistance measures in affected areas. Officials said financial assistance amounting to Rs 66.445 lakh has already been distributed to 1,243 affected households. Disaster response teams and district administrations are continuing assessment work in several areas to identify further damage and provide support to affected families.
