The Indian Media Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (IMCAB) has elected Shahin Chowdhury of Tripura Express as President and Masum Billah of Dainik Jugasankha and Eastern Chronicle as General Secretary for a two-year term, giving the organisation a new leadership team to represent Indian media outlets operating in Bangladesh.
The new committee was announced on Friday night during the IMCAB Night and biennial general meeting at Hotel Westin in the capital.
The committee includes Vice-President Rajib Khan (TV9), Joint General Secretary Mir Afroz Zaman (UNI), Treasurer Abu Ali (Amar Asom), and Organizing Secretary Aminul Haque Bhuiyan (Tripura Darpan). Executive members are Basudev Dhar (Dainik Statesman), Rafiqul Islam Sabuj (Dainik Desher Katha), Nirmal Chakraborty (Face News), Zakir Hossain (Dainik Spandan), and Monir Hossain (Tripura Times).
For members and correspondents, the leadership change comes after an uncontested election process. Voting was scheduled for September 5, while August 29 was the deadline for collecting and submitting nomination papers. As only one nomination was filed for each post, all candidates were elected unopposed. Mynul Hasan Sohel, General Secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), served as convener of the election conducting committee.
The IMCAB Night was chaired by outgoing president Kuddus Afrad, correspondent of Dainik Ei Samay. Gokul V.K., First Secretary of the Indian High Commission; Ayub Bhuiyan, General Secretary of the National Press Club; Somnath Dey, President of the Bangladesh chapter of Vishva Hindu Parishad; Farid Hossain, IMCAB’s founding convener and advisor; Anisur Rahman, advisor and PTI correspondent; and Dwip Azad, former General Secretary of IMCAB, attended the event. The programme concluded with a cultural programme.
